The chapters alternate between their two viewpoints. I preferred Sybil's character and story overall, I couldn't really buy into Cora's motivations and didn't feel like I got a meaningful insight into her character.
The author clearly did her research but the voice of the book just felt too modern. Would an 11th century queen really refer to her son as 'Lachy'?
It didn't help that names were changed to make them more accessible to the modern reader which I felt was unnecessary.
The plot also just felt a bit dull. It's almost impossible not to compare it to the Shakespeare tale and, in my opinion, it's just not a particularly interesting period of Scottish history.
Little things niggled me about the setting too like referring to Rosemarkie as 'Moray'. It may be on the Moray Firth but is most certainly not Moray.
Overall, it was solidly ok but I wouldn't be in a rush to recommend it to anyone. May 03, Liberty Jackson rated it it was amazing. I absolutely adored this book.
I love historical novels that are well researched enough that you learn plenty about the history without it feeling like you are being weighed down with unnecessary facts.
This book taught me loads about tenth century Scotland, how spread out it was, the practice of alternate succession, the danger and the religion.
I am personally very interested in Celtic Christianity, and how it developed separately from the Catholic Church, and there were just enough hints of I absolutely adored this book.
I am personally very interested in Celtic Christianity, and how it developed separately from the Catholic Church, and there were just enough hints of it here to draw me in.
There are two engaging female characters who are interesting and write their own stories, despite holding their power at least partly by their relation to men.
It is rare to read a book which deals so thoroughly with a conflict spread over decades, where it is so hard to take sides. I found myself routing for both sides to survive which is a world with the brutality of this one, was a recipe for heartache.
As it was set around little known historical events rather than following a standard three act structure, every twist and turn took me by surprise.
Blood Queen was not even slightly what I expected. But when the only criticism I really have is that it was a different book to the one I was expecting, I can one disappointed.
I was reading the story and the historical notes at the same times, got to page 33 and had to stop. I was already annoyed because the map is incorrect.
Since when did entire now cities move to a completely different part of the country?! I did not appreciate the odd name choices because the author felt the real ones don't "flow".
Are you kidding me? But the single most annoying thing that made me put the book down for good is calling the monarch s King of Scotland instead of Scots.
Oh yes, and I was reading the story and the historical notes at the same times, got to page 33 and had to stop. Oh yes, and Westminster being called the "English government" whilst discussing the return of the Stone of Destiny.
There has not been an English government since Considering this was supposed to be the historical notes, I do not see any point in reading a book where the author makes so many very basic mistakes.
The level of irony is laughable when she claims Shakespeare has told a fake story, yet hers is "true". Will not read this author again.
Oct 08, S. I have never read a book by this author before and so, this book was a nice introduction to her style of writing.
I liked the fact that it corrected the story already familiar to readers of Shakespeare I am one of those readers but it also went into a little more detail, into what really went down with the Macbeths.
I really enjoyed learning a little more about Scotland and her history as I didn't know very much about the country; this is despite the fact that I am English personally with I have never read a book by this author before and so, this book was a nice introduction to her style of writing.
I really enjoyed learning a little more about Scotland and her history as I didn't know very much about the country; this is despite the fact that I am English personally with some Scottish blood in my veins somewhere!
So it was a nice read from that point of view. I thought the cover was very attractive too. I do want to read more books by this author in the future, so that will be something to look forward to.
Aug 25, Linda Humberstone rated it really liked it. This is more interesting and truer than Shakespeare's rendering of Macbeth and Duncan and their fights to win the crown of Scotland.
The story is mainly about their wives and how they fared as queens to the warring opponents. It emphasises their support for their husbands and also the very real dangers they, and their offspring, faced each time the tide turned in the wrong direction for them.
This was an easy read and I found it to be quite enlightening; life at the top certainly wasn't easy This is more interesting and truer than Shakespeare's rendering of Macbeth and Duncan and their fights to win the crown of Scotland.
This was an easy read and I found it to be quite enlightening; life at the top certainly wasn't easy when trying to retain a hold on the throne.
You also realise how Edward 1st gained control over Scotland by Malcolm 3rd's swearing an oath of fealty to him for his support against Macbeth. I look forward to the next book by this author.
I think I expected to like this more. I did enjoy it but I wasnt as on board with the story as I wanted to be. Perhaps its because this is a really long time before my preferred historical period, I dont know.
It could also be that its Scottish history and not English. I did enjoy it but I probably had too high expectations from the beginning.
There is also a scene of a brutal rape which I wasnt expecting and so caught me off guard and subsequently upset me more than it might otherwise have.
I I think I expected to like this more. I will read more by this author though for sure. Feb 02, Anne rated it really liked it.
If you are interested in Scottish history, this book is for you. This is the story of Lady Macbeth and is based on real history and not Shakespeare's play.
This historical fiction novel was an amazing book to read and it was clear through historical detail, it had been well researched.
I would highly recommend this book and I loved the ornate cover. Oct 06, Donna rated it liked it. Enjoyed reading about the much maligned Lady MacBeth.
A brave and courageous woman who endured personal tragedies to fight for her country and family. Despite being a work of fiction, there is evidence of much historical research and the fifteen year reign of King Macbeth and his queen was a successful one.
Shakespeare has a lot to answer. Due donne, due regine entrambe forti e con un passato triste alle spalle. Ho amato ogni singola parte di questo libro e i suoi protagonisti che, sono sicura, mi mancheranno!!
Prossima lettura? Macbeth di Shakespeare. It took me a while to get in to the flow of this book, but when the narrative got going I was totally hooked.
Even cried at the end as it was very emotional. It was very graphic in some places though! Rich in historical detail and vivid imagery, Blood Queen is the story of two strong women one of whom is Lady Macbeth battling for the Scottish throne in the eleventh century.
This was one of those historical novels that was really easy to read and kept me entertained throughout. Amazing story.
Definitely a new favourite author! There are no discussion topics on this book yet. Readers also enjoyed. About Joanna Courtney.
Joanna Courtney. My first literary accolade was a creative writing prize at primary school and from that point on I wanted to be a novelist. Is she the blood countess that history tells?
Or was she a typical Royal at the time made an example of by the King? Look at the facts not story's that have been passed down to keep people in fear of possible fictional.
I used the word fact in quotes because of possible misinterpretation of Countess Bathorys take. People love monsters.
Don't they? This was a more minimalist approach to the story of one of history's most mythical human monsters.
I have heard some say that she was no more evil than other nobles of her time, and was singled out for being Protestant. There have been more opulent productions Erzsebet Bathory, such as Julie Delpy's and Juraj Jakubisko's about 10 years ago.
I thought it was pretty good, especially since it tried to personalize the children's relationship with the Countess, showing more dimensions to her than one sees in the more exploitive movies.
For a more expansive view, I recommend Delpy's and Jakubisko's films. For a human interest approach, this one worked well. This movie was just terrible.
The movie was a heap of garbage from beginning to end. We waited and waited for something interesting to happen.
I'm not much on turning historical tales and "thrillers" into cute kids in jeopardy, as I almost invariably find such stories stupidly written and the acting of the cute kids not very good.
So, that I liked this enough to give it a solid 3 stars says something. If you're looking for the true history of Countess Bathory brought to life, obviously a documentary would be better.
Where it really fell apart for me was as they approached the ending, trying to ramp up the jeopardy of the cute kids with just a few too many pieces to make it "thrilling" not and then they bent their way through too much seemingly to try to get their fictional characters lined up with the historical at the end.
What did work was the acting of Isabelle Allen, who is a child actress with some real talent. The movie was officially Russian but made in that pan-national approach that's becoming more common, with casting the English actress helpful.
Given what the aristocracy was in that part of the world, sitting in an intersection for East, West, and a mix of multiple languages and cultures, it works.
However, some of the Gypsy angles including use of the word were fairly stereotypical and might not thrill the Roma, though they do end up the heroes.
The visuals and costumes are lovely even when menacing, and there's nothing over the top as far as violence or nudity and sex one scene, gratuitous but brief and shot tastefully.
So, if you want something suggestively spooky or PG Halloween kids and parents can watch, this story of Elizabeth Bathory and the children of the night is an ok choice.
I was surprised at how the movie was really carried by children actors. It's actually a fresh take on The Countess. Better than most movies and honestly on Prime a gem.
The only gripe is the accents are inconsistent. A Romanian gypsy girl that speaks perfect English?!
While the Countess has a heavy accent as well as the sister if the gypsy girl. I loved this movie though. Everyone is bad mouthing this movie, but what they are all forgetting is it was a B Rate movie, with a low budget to begin with.
That being kept in mind, it actually wasn't that bad of a movie. Could they have done better with this? This article uses Western name order when mentioning individuals.
